PSA: You deserve clothing that fits you now

I discovered a thrift store near me that apparently gets donations from major name retailers, scored 3 pairs of various high end label jeans for $7 each, all in my new smaller size. No need to go around with yo pants drooping, even on a budget.

I thrift my clothes for now (except for bras and undies, of course). Once I am at goal I plan on actually shopping for NEW clothes. I hate baggy clothes...I feel so sloppy. I am not rich, but can afford $6 for jeans.
I been doing this too until I get down to my final weight. I pretty much had to since I had zero jeans that fit me. I've got plenty of summer clothes that still fit so I probably won't have to worry about that until next year.

I seem to have a lot of friends and friendly acquaintances who are walking around in saggy, ballooney, billowy clothes, bras that barely hold their boobs without falling off them, underwear that won't stay up, pants they swim in, etc. They've lost several sizes, and they're vocally bummed about looking ridiculous in their tent clothes but "I don't wanna spend money on new clothes when I'm not at my goal yet." Some of these friends are very financially well-off, and it's like they're punishing themselves for having ever gotten fat in the first place by withholding well-fitting clothing til they're done, and it's fucked.

If you're walking around in clothes that don't fit you because transitional clothing isn't in your budget, then this post is NOT directed at you. Times are hard and the economy is shit and I hope you get where you're going soon and get all the joy in the world when it's time to get your new wardrobe. And if you genuinely don't care about how you dress, and it's just not something that factors into your happiness, then you keep right on doing you and I wish you the best, I'm not at all saying it should matter IF it does not.

But if transitional clothing IS in your means and wearing it WOULD make you happy, and the only thing that's stopping is you a voice in your head telling you that it's stupid to buy clothing that fits you now but won't in a month or so, you don't have to feel like you don't deserve to wear clothes that fit well until you're at your goal. The joy you'd get from looking good in a nice outfit that fits well today is worthy. The comfort of bras and underwear that aren't saggy is not something you need to "earn" by finishing up your loss.

I bought transitional clothing the entire way down (mostly secondhand; threadup, Poshmark, thrift stores and Goodwill's, etc). Started at size fourteen jeans and dresses, currently wearing fours. Bought 12's, 10's, 8's, 6's, and did not give a damn that I'd have to donate them back before long. It's meant I've gotten to walk around looking and feeling more and more fabulous all the time since last June, which is a hell of a lot better of a deal than walking around with all my progress hidden in tents, feeling bummed and dreaming of the day I could "unveil" it. That would have been a waste of time that I could have spent feeling happy.
Good advice!!

I have the tendency to buy one size up from what I can snugly fit into. Those what if I gain back some of it situations still pop into my head time to time.

Yeah, I'm kind of cheap when it comes to clothing. So, yep, consignment shops, thred ups, Goodwill..found some really good items. The only thing I have purchased new is a dress for an upcoming wedding and bras/underwear...I only have about 15 lbs or so to go, so I can probably get away with buying a few items now of permanent clothing, esp things like jackets, t-shirts and blouses. I'm going to have to wait on the pants as it seems my hind end is really disappearing ...starting to look like a 2x4 with boobs.
The 2x4 thing!! I can relate. My boobs are the only big thing left but I am learning to embrace old white lady ass.

For me, my weight‑loss journeys(yes plural) have been a roller coaster, and my closet is kinda like the souvenir shop. I’ve kept everything from size 11 to 26W because the “what if” monster lives rent‑free in my head. We're talking a couple(ok maybe a few) decades, so some will be wildly outdated in style(never been a fashionista) sweatshirt and jeans does me fine. Before I decided to purchase anything, I went closet shopping , found brand new jeans with tags still on ( seven pairs! ), a few dress slacks, and some cute blouses in sizes that I'm currently in. I remember ordering some of them, trying them on, and immediately tossing them into the “I’ll fit into these as soon as I lose weight” bucket s .

Well, that day finally showed up, some of those clothes actually fit me now, some even loose. Eventually, I'll hit the thrift stores(I'm cheap yes) donate some of my stock(if they'll take it) and purchase newer, you'd be surprised at the stuff ppl get rid of.

When I do, not If I do, reach goal, I will go shopping for a few NEW "night out on the town" outfits like I used to do back in the day, carelessly, happily even lol
I actually found several vacuum bags under my bed with clothes that never fit that I couldn't bring myself to part with. I am also lucky enough to have a mom who is great at alterations. For my really, really nice work clothes, we altered as much as we could, but there were several bags that I just donated, hoping someone who needed them would find them at that thrift.

My sister-in-law has shopped exclusively at the thrift ever since she started losing weight and she has saved a lot of money and bought a lot of things NWTs.

I kept one top and one pair of pants from when I was fat. It's time to remove them from my home. They serve zero purpose.

I am interested in getting some better fitting clothes. I am just not sure how much time or effort that I can dedicate to the cause, especially if its something to use temporarily.

I did that! Tossed all my too big clothing. It's a mental thing, I don't want worry about the past, I have pics of me at 320lbs, I don't need clothes sitting around taking up space in my drawers and in my head. No going back. Ever.

That's what is great about Goodwill and like places...can just get temporary clothing to tide one over.

I have no idea what to wear anymore. I need a professional or my sister (she lives far away) to help me out. Wandered around a department store yesterday and was just overwhelmed. On a side note, I typically just shop at a Farm store and get boot cut jeans, cowboy boots and t-shirts are my typical summer fare around the farm and riding. So dressing better is a bit of a stretch for my brain
Sounds like you dress great. Just add a few tank tops to show off your muscles. If you lived here I would take you shopping.

My hubs just informed me this morning that I looked a bit "frail"...uh oh... 😳 Weight sits on me differently in my 60s than it did when I was younger and he thinks at 155 I'm starting to look a tad thin.

Seriously considering this autumn (after riding season) getting a gym membership and just making the drive ...I need more muscle!

Every week I sit in the wallyworld parking lot (I'm dw's chauffeur)

90% of all females entering are wearing black legging.

Is there "style" anymore?

Absolutely.

Having been through multiple big weight swings in my life, I do tend to hang on to clothes that don't fit me in case this comes up. In fact, I have a bunch of stuff waiting for me when I hit my goal 😅... probably out of style at this point but it will be satisfying to have it fit again.

The only thing I would add is that stuff that fit you at a particular weight in the past may not look the same when you get there due to body comp changes. I have a lot more muscle in my chest & shoulders than I did last time I weighed 220 ... I may never fit in most off-the-rack men's large again even at my GW, even though that was one of my benchmarks in the beginning. Success may not look exactly like what we thought when we started.

After losing 40 lbs (not on GLPs) the 1st thing I did was binge shop on shein😂 It was a lot cheaper a few years ago so for $100 I would get 10 dresses (half of which I never even wore) - I was just so excited to be back to the size I was in my 20s. Don't even get me started about the endless skimpy bathing suits I got and haven't worn any😂

Serves me right for disdaining clothing-craze. I was just gifted a tshirt for an upcoming anniversary date I was trying hard to forget... can't stop women.

Well, I can stop mine if I choose to do so. The problem is, I was under the flu and I forgot the damn birthday was coming up
