A fun topic I think. I have both a 4 electrode and a Hume body pod with 8 electrodes. The Hume is interesting but just got it a few weeks ago. What your favorite type of body composition scale?

So is Dexa a joke to you also?

Dexa is the least humorous way to practically measure body fat, that I'm aware of. It's still relatively imprecise, just the least imprecise.

I had my third dexa today, the first was 1/30.

Do you also have a Bia scale and how did it compare?

Dexa and Tanita 4 electrode scale I have match up very closely. The inbody scale used at my doctor synced up nearly perfectly 3 different times with recently performed dexas. I bought an 8 electrode scale Runstar that looks and sounds official but runs about 4% higher in bf than every other thing I mentioned here but still great for tracking loss or gain. Just a little demoralizing when it gives a shittier result lol. I’ve found them to be very helpful. Dexa or BIA needs to be done at similar times and body conditions regarding fasted or unfasted and hydrated etc. I’ll do a dexa at some point again when I’m at my goal just because bit for me it isn’t worth the effort regularly

The reality is that the dexa isn't perfect either especially with the various editions and updates giving different results.

Fair enough. Perfect and useful are separate things of course. I find them useful. You are exactly correct in my experience about various editions and updates. Scales and dexa both and likely operators on the dexa. Consistency is helpful

MRI body composition is gold standard, followed by dexa. Only professional Tanita type scales come close. Get a scan, compare the result with your scale and calculate the % difference.

Just my two cents on this. I’m a long time user of the Renpho scales. Obviously the scales aren’t going to be the most accurate compared to Dexa/MRI, but it’s far more economical in a weekly basis. I generally use the scales to get a rough indicator of direction, not accuracy. Honestly, the most accurate measurement outside of the expensive options are comparing to pictures online and seeing how you track

Because of the sucky Hume app and the potential for a much better app I may switch to another brand like the Renpho but hopefully better tech will come along in the meantime.

Renpho Elis 2X here. I like it for weight, fat% and BMI tracking. I've read that it's pretty close.

I'm keen to see how the Withings body scan 2 goes . Their previous models seem to have not done so well , the new model seems to take a slightly different approach to others currently available.

Hopefully new technology has some accuracy.

If you look at any scale, you will see that half the people love them and half hate them. I knew they were mostly useless but I did some research and bought a Hume figuring it might be good for at least indicating direction if not for actual numbers. Of course it was a lot off from my dexa but it is also useless for direction. It says I've gained a pound of fat in the last month despite my weight being stable and my strength going up. The mirror test verifies I haven't gained an once of fat. Its an expensive, mostly useless toy. At least it tells me my weight.
