A 2026 meta-analysis and systematic review of over 21,000 patients.

Study published in, Renal Failure , comprehensively summarizes the efficacy and safety profile of GLP-1: Meta-analysis study

Key positive findings:

1. GLP-1s reduced the risk of serious kidney events by 16% for those with kidney disease;

2. GLP-1s reduced albuminuria (protein leaking from kidney into urine), a first sign of kidney stress;

3. GLP-1s reduced major heart and stroke events by 16%;

4. GLP-1s reduced "renal sinus fat" (fat around the kidneys), which reduces the load of the heart;

5. GLP-1s reduced all-cause mortality by 17%;

6. GLP-1s reduced systemic inflammation protecting the heart, brain, and kidneys simultaneously.

Key negative findings:

1. GLP-1s increased nausea four-fold temporarily;

2. GLP-1s increased vomiting or diarrhea three-fold temporarily.

God I love a meta analysis. Especially a meta analysis of a specific topic, so they hone in on the benefits to a specific function instead of the overall benefits. For context (if you weren't sure from the journal name), this meta analysis was specifically for impacts on chronic kidney disease, not all impacts of GLP-1s - which is probably what most people would be looking for. And while I'm not shooting myself up for my kidneys specifically, it's nice to know these specific benefits exist.
