Hey y’all,
I am a late 30s male, early on my journey in the GLPs world. Excited to connect with you all!
A little about myself, I am a music lover, (big deadhead), family man, and workaholic
.
I don’t normally jump into talking about myself, but this is an introduce yourself page, so, here we go!
A little about why I am here:
I am committed to improving my health and quality of life.
First some context. I have had success with weight management in bursts throughout my adult life; through intense exercise regiments and dieting. These have proved unsustainable against my proclivity to backslide into binge eating/ snacking, and a longterm tendency of social drinking.
I consider myself proficient with exercise technique, cardio, weight training, yoga, and outdoor sports. I am also generally well educated on nutrition, and when dieting, lean towards a whole food, paleo, or high fiber/ high protein organic diet. I love to cook! I love to be outside and love physical activity! Despite all this, historically, I have continued to inhibit my own success. Through impulsive or self destructive behavior patterns.
For the past decade, since my late 20s (when I could still eat and drink what I wanted with minimal consequence) I have gone on a roller coaster of: putting weight on, hitting low points in energy, health, and mood, (rock bottom if you will) then radically altering this behavior: getting in shape through militaristic diet and exercise, abstinence from alcohol/ recreational drugs, ultimately feeling better, only to self sabotage all over again and regain the weight… As I get older, it is becoming harder to get back in shape. I go through this cycle every 1-2 years it seems…
I have struggled at times with unhealthy behavior: binge eating, alcohol, and recreational drug use. They all amplify each other. (Example: night of heavy drinking, followed by day of hungover binge eating fried food, or pizza, etc…) I was also a smoker for many years but have quit, a few years solid now.
With a new family in tow, now more than ever, I want to find a solution that helps me achieve longterm/ sustainable success in weight management, and overall health. Since becoming a father, I have cut down or completely eliminated alcohol and drug use. But food has been my nemesis, and proved harder to quell than all other vices for me.
Through my research, mostly online, this forum, Reddit, various research papers and publications, the suggestion that GLP drugs are showing promising results in not only appetite suppression, but also other habits like drug or alcohol use, I felt compelled to experiment. The thought that I could not only find aid in weight management, but also potentially help establish better relationships to food and alcohol in the longterm would be life changing.
After reading a great deal of material on the subject, I first started by talking through all of this with my primary care physician. In 2025.
I was at another low point and ready to try something new. I am 5’9”, and at the time, weighed in at an all time high of 223lbs. Well over my “normal” healthy weight range of 165-170lbs.
Same old story: I was prescribed Wegovy, but insurance would not cover it. I don’t have diabetes, or other measurable complications from weight, other than cholesterol levels that my doctor wants to see go down through better diet and exercise…. For my height and age, I am technically obese at this weight.
The bill for a months supply was over $1000, which prevented me from even trying it.
Cue several friends that passionately advocated that I explore alternative options as they had. I spent a few months reading, including popping into this forum.
Now I am here, and eager to participate!
Where I am now:
I have started my journey. I am 6 weeks in, taking a low and slow dosing approach with Reta, and already seeing a massive improvement in quality of life and self control. I have blended in enjoyable exercise routines and diet, and plan to post a little on this to hopefully help others in the near future.
At this point I consider myself an enthusiast, and very much look forward to connecting with you all! Many of your stories and posts have helped guide me already. I am grateful to join this community. I hope to give back some day, as I continue to learn and experiment, working towards improved longterm health.
Thank you for listening to my story!
