Finally loaded up my Savvio pen but….

Last month I posted on here about recommendations for pens and after research and reading I decided to pay a little extra for 2 Savvio pens. I figured I would have piece of mind since it’s a more reputable brand and I’m a firm believer of you get what you pay for.

Well yesterday I finally ran out of one of my research vials and I figured I would switch that research fluid to one of my Savvio pens.

Got it loaded it up and figured I’d check its accuracy using an EasyTouch 30g .3ml 8mm needle insulin syringe into the end of the pen where you would put the pens needle.

Clicked up 5 units and pressed….insulin syringe only went up to 3 units….ok maybe I did something wrong. Tried again, clicked 5 units pressed the pen button slowly and syringe only went up to 4 units.

I did prime the syringe by drawing in air before pinning it into the pen.

Does anyone know of any other ways to test? Am I doing something wrong? Is fluid getting lost in the 8mm needle of the syringe cause it’s too long? Is it possible the pens are counterfeit?

I haven’t tried the second pen I have, that’s still in the box but kinda bummed I spent so much on my very first 2 pens.

I only use water when testing my pens. (don't waste peps!)

Did you fill the syringe with water and empty it several times before using it to test? This makes a huge difference on how well it fills when testing.

Yea I thought about not using pep but it was already there and more convenient so I said screw it lol

I’ll have to try water and filling the syringe multiple times with the other pen I have in the box still. I’ll report back

I keep a cartridge just for water to use for testing. I labeled it "test", so I know which one to use. Any used cartridge will work. When prepping my syringe to test, I find warm water seems to work best. New syringes can be really hard to draw and push, so I find "loosening" it is an important step to get an accurate test dose.

So I loaded up one cartridge with water and ran water through the insulin syringe multiple times before starting the test. I ran 3 different tests at different doses. Every one was off. I recorded videos of the last tests but I’m unable to attach them. The insulin syringe shows about .5 - 1 unit short from what I selected on the pens. Not a lot of difference but it’s difference that shouldn’t be there for the price of these pens.

I sent them an email the morning I did the test, waiting for a reply. And yes the test was done on both pens.

Very much this.

Re-do your test, after filling the syringe and then emptying it. The stiction in the new syringe is going to throw off the test.

Heard back from the vendor and they said for doses under 10 units +\- 1 unit is within ISO pen standards annd annything over 10 units it’s +\- 5% the dialed dosage.

So I guess they are within the standard?

I try not to do doses that small. 10 units is my minimum. I like them to be larger still. 20-25 is ideal if I have a choice.

If you want a pen accurate to +/- 0.5u, try the Allstar Jr which allows 0.5 increments, but only goes up to 30u max. Generally, I try to get pins 10-30 units to minimize this effect, and expect about +/-1u. I have one V2 pen (that I don't use) which always drops the first unit.

Also make really sure there are NO bubbles, even really tiny ones. They will compress and make the dose smaller. It helps to chill the water to get them to dissolve. The manual pens tend to have fewer problems with stiction, while the autos like Bird, Gansu, Convi are nice, but can go REALLY slow or get stuck.

I think all the pens sort of have a bit of trouble with that small of a dose. I agree with the vendor that +/- 1 unit is a reasonable expectation. Recheck it at like 15-20 and dial more slowly. The rubber stopper in the cartridge needs time to move in response to pressure IMO especially if you're doing small doses.

That's weird. I got a cheap $15 V2 recently and did the test with 5 units It was spot on! I was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting it not to be accurate. I wonder why yours was off.

All I know is my Savio is dead on in 10 unit increments.

I tested my Savvio a bunch of times with varying doses from small to large and never once had a dosing issue. It was so reliable I literally grew bored of testing.
