Sorry for my ignorance, but what's the benefit of GE? Why are international travelers worried about losing it?

lets you breeze through passport control when entering the US, which can save hours at certain times/airports. for people who travel internationally a lot, that's a big deal. and being interrogated at passport control hurts even more after a 15 hour flight, so even when it's not quicker, it's better.
