Crypto wallet recommendations?

i unloaded my belongings out of storage over this past 104F+ early summer stretch week+ 🄵 hopefully get the Trezor gear working with Exodus over the coming weekend. Thanks for this discussion folks; anybody using the deep storage 'metal' offline safe ? beginning to think BTC is a volatile "rat hole" commodity when you toss in transit fees...

My very recent noob (first time) crypto experience.

Opened up a Coinbase Account (not coinbase wallet) and used a bank transfer to purchase Bitcoin. The Bitcoin was immediately in my Coinbase account and I could freely trade it within the account if I wanted. But there was a 7 day hold so I couldn't transfer any of my Bitcoin out of the account (to make a purchase). This hold was lifted in exactly 7 days.

While waiting for the above hold to clear I opened up an Exodus Wallet account. After the above 7-day hold lifted I was able to transfer some Bitcoin from my Coinbase account to Exodus. I then sent Bitcoin from Exodus to a vendor to make a purchase. Very painless.

Next I decided I should have some more funds on-hand in my Coinbase wallet for future purchases. I did another bank transfer and these funds were immediately available to trade or transfer out. No more Holds.

It was a great learning experience.

If you DM me your ref links for those I’ll go ahead and sign up. I wanted to DM you myself but IDK if I can’t find where to do it or if I’m too new lol.

This forum resonates with me because of the mind*uck I went through trying to figure out crypto. I watched several YT and read some Google recommendations. I loaded Exodus, Crypto, Wise and Coinbase.

Still, I felt like an idiot not able to accomplish the end result which was to successfully transfer funds to buy. I've heard and read CashApp. So I do have Cashapp and one day I was bored and playing around and BOOM...it looked like I was able to buy Bitcoin, asked for a friends crypto account address, after 4-5 tries I transferred $20.

I was a happy person. So I had a vendor in mind, we figured out an order, I bought enough Bitcoin to cover the order and room for fees and any mistake I might make. IT WENT THROUGH! I did this one more time and bought more. Somewhere I read that you're not able to or soon will not be able to buy Bitcoin and buy something using CashApp.

So I was bored one day and opened up my Wise account, looked at my info to transfer money to Wish, went back to CashApp bought some Bitcoin, went through the same steps that I did with the two previous purchases but this time i had my Wise account address and was able to send money to my Wish account.

Now in my Wise account I had money there. A few days later I wanted to buy product, figured out a total, they gave me an an account address and I was able to buy the product using Bitcoin I bought on CashApp through my Wise account. LOL...I am now able to do this again and again. Sorry for the novel but anyone that struggles to do down this rabbit hole...I understand!

I thought it would be fun to trade crypto, but the spread fees are a bummer. Any way to minimize that?

btw love the calculator....great find!

I hope this help someone. It made it very clear to me.

Yes, exchanges and wallets are different, though they’re often confused—especially by people new to crypto. Here’s a breakdown to make it clearer:

šŸ”

Crypto Exchange = Where You Buy and Sell

Think of a crypto exchange (like Coinbase, Binance, or Kraken) as a bank or trading platform:

You use real money (USD, etc.) to buy crypto (like Bitcoin or Ethereum).

Your crypto stays in the exchange’s wallet, not fully under your control.

The exchange can freeze your account, especially if you send money to suspicious places (gambling, dark web, gray-market sites, etc.).

Examples: Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, Crypto.com

šŸ”

Wallet = Where You Actually Own Your Crypto

A crypto wallet is where you control the keys, which means you fully own the crypto.

There are hot wallets (software, always connected to the internet) and cold wallets (offline, like a USB drive).

Exodus, Trust Wallet, and MetaMask are examples of hot wallets.

In a wallet like Exodus, you hold your own private keys, so no one can freeze your funds.

This is where you send crypto from the exchange, then send from there to vendors, especially if buying from risky or anonymous sites.

🚫 Why You Shouldn’t Send from an Exchange Directly

If you:

Buy crypto on Coinbase,

Then send it directly to a vendor (like a peptide seller, casino site, etc.),

The exchange may:

Flag or freeze your account.

Report you for violating their terms of service.

Delay or cancel transactions.

To avoid this, people move the crypto first to a private wallet (like Exodus), then send it from there.

⚔ Analogy:

Exchange = like keeping your cash in a bank that watches everything you buy.

Wallet = like withdrawing your money as cash and spending it however you want.

That's one of the ways I do it. Exodus is the wallet I use as well.
PayPal/Exodus is the route I think I’m going to take. This will be my first crypto exercise, and am hesitant because, well, it’s my first one. Question - if I deposit $ into PayPal, I should make my purchase within days and not let the funds sit in PayPal very long, yes?

There's no time limit in PP. Think of it as a repository.

Setting up is very strange.

Coinbase needed my drivers license scanned(which took forever because they kept saying the pic was 'blurry') but I DID get a free 50$ in BTC added onto my account for buying the first 50$.

Exodus in comparison felt odd with no account setup but im gonna dry run a couple transfers so I get the hang of it.

This thread as been very educational. Thanks for sharing your tips and advice, all. I have no crypto related accounts or wallets, and needed to figure this out before making my first purchase. Knowing there is a potential hold period when you first sign up is good to know...

Just a note all and maybe you all know...when using PP for a purchase always click on Family and Friends with NO comments/notes.

No harm letting funds sit in your PayPal account. I think it might even get like 4% interest. Just don't pay from your PayPal account, only your wallet.

After you've bought PYusd in PayPal:

To transfer from PayPal open your Exodus wallet and select PYusd > Receive > copy the sequence. You'll paste this after selecting "send" in the PayPal app. You can test this with something small.

Some exchanges (Coinbase, Kraken, Crypto.com, PayPal etc) have a brief hold on transferring to a new destination. It's called "whitelisting" (Google it) and is a fraud prevention process.

Personally I think PayPal/Exodus is a great choice. Kraken kicked me out for "security reasons" they refuse to disclose (common practice with them) and crypto.com holds your funds weeks before you can pay a vendor! My bank Truist (merger of SunTrust and BB&T) does not allow any transfers to crypto.com either. I had to call fraud detection with each transfer.

With PayPal and Exodus I can get funds from my banking app to a vendor in a few minutes.

I like the virtual debit card option in Exodus. I added it to Walmart Pay, and it worked at in-store checkout. I also added the Exodus virtual card to my Google wallet.

But the Exodus virtual card doesn't work so far for buying crypto elsewhere.

I didn't know they did that. I use capital one for virtual cards. I have to check out exodus.

This is all GREAT info! Thank you all.
